 | | At High Street Media, we like oxygen, oceans, ice caps, and trees... we understand that there are some businesses that go out of their way to club baby sea lions to death (not so much businesses really, as much as "Inuits", natives of Alaska who hold hunting licenses ) and others that like to pollute, over use resources, and generally trash the place. We think that's bad (the trashing the place bit... as for the Inuits, we are just glad we don't have to watch the seasonal culling... its much the same as we do here in OZ with kangaroo's... and I like a bit of kangaroo pizza), so we are doing out darnedest to make Al Gore proud... so we changed a couple of things around here, in an effort to be greener, eat more bean sprouts and hug more trees. | | We recycle: Did you know, that each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill space, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 7000 gallons of water. This represents a 64% energy savings, a 58% water savings, and 60 pounds less of air pollution! These 17 trees saved (above) can absorb a total of 250 pounds of carbon dioxide from the air each year. Burning that same ton of paper would create 1500 pounds of carbon dioxide. So yes... we recycle, because we like our trees where they should be. In the ground, being hugged by hippies. | | | Our printers plant trees: We like trees, and so do the people we use to do our printing. In an Australian first that reduces the impact of our printing on the environment and climate change, our printers Plant Trees is an initiative between Saltprint and Carbon Neutral. Trees planted are guaranteed for 70 years. On average, over 70 years six trees planted in Australia will absorb 1 tonne of CO2. Trees also help to combat salinity, reduce soil erosion, clean underground water systems and provide habitat for wildlife. They also use recycled stock... so now you can feel even better when you hand our you High Street Media designed business cards and print materials. | | Green energy: Per capita, Australia is one of the highest greenhouse gas emitters in the industrialised world. One of the main causes of this is the generation of electricity from coal... We didn't like that, so we did what you can do too. We found a supplier that allowed us to plug into the new Smart Grid emerging in Australia... this means we use wind mills, solar panels, water turbines and people on bikes that peddle to power tv's (unverified)... this is easy to switch over to, and we would encourage you to check out http://www.greenpower.nsw.gov.au/home.aspx for more information. | | Green transport: What we want is a fleet of Tesla's but we dont (maybe one day)... but what we do have is push bikes, motorbikes, and some of the markets most fuel efficient cars. The other thing we have is feet, and we use those as often as we can. | | Green Technology: Here at High Street Media, I wont lie to you, we are geeks and we like our technology. So in being green, we didnt want to sacrifice crazy, sexy cool geek toys... Thanks to companies like apple, who have produced not just a great laptop, but a green laptop, we are able to have both. For example, our laptops are made form parts that are and can be recycled, there are no toxic chemicals either in them or used in their manufacture, they have little packaging (even what they have is made from recycled bits) and they are the most energy efficient computer on the market... smart and sexy... just like us.
| | Pretty much paperless office: The paperless office was the dream sold to us in the 1980's when the computer was just becoming popular... it like most things that are sold with a jingle was a lie... the paperless office never did arrive, however the pretty much paperless office became an option. We use some of the wonders of a computerised world like Skype, PDF's, e-Mail, iPhones with calendars that update across all devices, instant messaging, and lots of computer screens (and we are introducing touch screens to the office)... that and we yell down anyone who prints stuff in an ongoing game of public slagging... so by doing reduced our dependence on paper. Its actually pretty easy once you start. | | We watch Al Gore movies: Sure... we understand that watching "An Inconvinient Truth" isnt going to save a whole bunch of nothing, but what it can do (like it did for us) is create a whole lot of awareness to the issues we face. Watch it (with popcorn) and other docco's like "Who Killed The Electric Car" or "The 11th Hour", with your coworkers, your partner, your family. Let them get you scared or angry enough to do something... we aint hippies and we like our cars, motorbikes and technology over here... but we like having a place for our kids to grow up a whole bunch more... so get recycling your PET's today! (thats pets as in plastic bottles... not your family cat... recycling that wont really help). | | We still eat cows though... apparently they are bad, what with the gas and the CO2... but they taste good... so we eat them |
